Max Factor Mascara – Review

On Saturday I purchased a new mascara, my previous one had gone a bit clumpy and using it made my eyelashes resemble a spindly spider with very clumpy boots on.

I’m afflicted with stubby eyelashes, I spend alot of time wishing they were long and fluttery, but wishes don’t tend to come true so I have to try and find a mascara to do the leg work for me.

When I spotted this Max Factor mascara on the shelf in Boots, I was drawn to it’s name (I alway’s judge books by their covers, I’m so easily swayed by advertising) and that’s how I ended up choosing Max Factor’s: (this is is how I saw it in my head anyway)

!!!!Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara!!!!

“buy me Estelle, I’ll make your eyelashes so long and pretty, ooh aaah”

had  to buy it immediately, despite it’s hefty price tag of £11.99. You can buy you own Max Factor Voluptous False Lash Effect Mascara here from Boots (but, I would read on before you run to grab it and wham it in your basket).

First up, I really like the colour of the packaging. It feels fancy and shiny and I liked that.

This is what my normal, naked eyelashes look like. No other eye makeup, except for a primer and my usual BB cream as I want to show exactly how the mascara performed.

I know, it’s like I have NO eyelashes.

I eagerly broke into the mascara’s packaging, which was no mean feat by the way. The brush looked very promising. The rubbery bristles look like they are able to hold aIMG_9074 lot of mascara and all the little bristles look to be arranged to grab every last one of your lashes. Brilliant.

The mascara itself is very black The shade I picked is simply called “black” (which is an ideal name for it really), or you could have had “black brown”

I always go for the blackest shade I can find, it makes my eyelashes feel far more bold.

I then set to work carefully applying my new miracle mascara.

Here is one mascara’d eye and one not, so you can see the difference.

Now, I know what you are thinking, which eye is the mascara even on? I’ll be honest, I was expecting big things, I’ve seen the adverts on TV and I was starting to feel disheartened. Was my £11.99 money wasted? I pressed on in the hope that once applied to both eyelashes, the desired effect would soon appear and I’d be mistaken for Jessica Rabbit by the end of the day.

Here’s both eyes fully mascara’d:

Hardly voluptous right? They certainly do not have the false lash effect I was promised.

The mascara is described by Max Factor on the Boots website :

Introducing the NEW Max Factor Voluptuous False Lash Effect Mascara! Our innovative new Lash Uplift Brush features dual application in one stroke; the unique fins load formula and grip lashes for lift and volume, while long bristles separate and comb lashes.

The Lash Uplift brush enables a 360° application, wrapping each lash with more formula, while the boost tip helps you coat more of the tiny, hard-to-reach lashes.

Lashes have 5 x more volume than bare lashes, for a wide awake look.

Honestly? This mascara does not deliver, personally I’m not seeing 5 x more volume, or extra lift.

I like how black the mascara is and it was obvious I had mascara on, but they certainly weren’t really any longer than my naked eyelashes. I was massively disappointed. Also, on a side note, if you cry when you are wearing this mascara it is a) not waterproof and b) really makes your eyes sting.

I also found that the application brush was really fat, making it a bit tricky to coat my eyelashes without coating my eyelid and lower lashes at the same time. It also stayed very wet for what felt like a long time and blinking upended alot of mascara onto my eyelid.

It is long lasting and after a full day at work and a few accidental eye rubs (and crying) it lasted well into the evening before I removed it. There was some lift in my lashes and they curled upwards after application, which was an improvement.

All in all, I would not buy this mascara again, I don’t think it delivered what I expected, especially for the price.

Have you tried this mascara? Do you have any tips on how to improve my eyelash game? Let me know below!

  1. I struggle finding mascaras, my lashes are opposite though and like lanky daddy long legs legs lol! The only one I have loved is Urban Decay. Benefit for me is too clumpy but might be good for you. Clinique is too thin
